Produced from the Sony STR is a nice looking, aesthetically well balanced, receiver. It's Direct coupled power amp produces 60 watts per channel. The brushed aluminum face, beveled knobs and green dial give it a sophisticated look. The sleek optional wood case is well designed too. The older Sony receivers fly under the radar these days and are underrated by most enthusiasts.
Are the vintage Sony receivers any good?
Since no one listens before they buy, selling today's receivers is a numbers game, and sound quality takes a back seat. It's a strange turn of events, but mainstream manufacturers long ago gave up on the idea of selling receivers on the basis of superior sound quality. I'm not claiming today's receivers sound "bad," but since almost no one ever listens to a receiver before they buy one, selling sound quality is next to impossible.
