With aging comes inevitable change. I believe quality of life, well-being, level of satisfaction with life, positive health outcomes, and outcomes in several aspects heavily depend on individual ability to embrace and approach change in a positive, productive manner. I believe having a mental advantage—knowing how to maintain positive thinking above negative, challenging circumstances—improves likelihood for positive change and healing in life. In particular, I explored this with those who face challenging circumstances outside of their control, such as debilitating disease, chronic illness, or significant loss of a loved one.

Journal of Adult Development. Although adult development is commonly understood as change over time, the relationship between time and development is rarely highlighted in research in the field. This paper first reviews 3 dimensions of time that interact in the study of developmental processes in the life course. The 3 dimensions are historical time; chronological age or life time; and social time, the culturally-specific, systematic ordering of life events. Second, the paper utilizes data from a follow-up study of HIV-positive men and women to illustrate the importance of time in development.
Four Adult Development Theories and Their Implications for Practice
In this article, we draw on the theoretical and empirical literature to name what appear to be core dimensions of successful young adult development. We also describe some possible indicators and measures of those dimensions and sketch the kinds of developmental relationships and opportunities young people need in adolescence to effectively transition to a successful young adulthood, as well as the developmental relationships and opportunities young adults need for continued well-being. We name eight social, psychological, behavioral, educational, occupational, health, ethical, and civic dimensions of successful young adult development, and suggest that only a minority of adolescents are well-prepared to make a transition to successful young adulthood. The goal of the article is twofold: to contribute to the articulation of and consensus on the dimensions of successful young adult development, and to lay the groundwork for subsequent research to empirically validate both those core dimensions, as well as developmental indicators of progress toward attainment of these proposed dimensions of well-being. Promoting the healthy development of children and adolescents requires a clear vision of successful young adult development, that is, articulation of the dimensions and indicators of what constitutes well-being in the next stage of development for which children and adolescents are preparing.

For example, if we believe that people mature by passively absorbing knowledge and reacting to their environments, our instruction differs from that of teachers who assume knowledge is constructed and that development depends on active participation with the environment.
